A Thrilling Return For SMMA Musical Theatre!
Posted on: 4th May 2023Last week, St Mary Magdalene Academy was wowed by 2 magical nights of musical theatre with our students‘ latest production: Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar.
This iconic 1970s musical is a challenging production, telling the universally-known story of Jesus from a bold new angle – that of Judas Iscariot. Set against a familiar backdrop, the production explores Jesus' relationships and struggles with Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples and followers, and the Roman Empire. The story is told entirely in song, with many powerful and recognisable numbers like 'I don't know how to love him’.
Our students rose brilliantly to meet the challenge - and went on to surpass all our expectations. Over two nights, each full-house audience was treated to a superb show that beautifully balanced strong emotion with thrilling entertainment.
It's been 3 years since our last musical production and – wow – it was worth the wait! Every aspect of the show was a triumph, from the music, singing and acting to the seamless technical and backstage support. Our huge congratulations and thanks go to all involved.
