Year 8 homework expectations 2016-2017

21 September 2016

Dear Parent/Carer

I am writing to share with you the expectations for homework for this Academic year for pupils in Year 8. Rather than having specific days on which homework is set your child will receive the following homework:

Subject / homeworks per week

Maths – 2
English – 2
Science – 1
French/Spanish/German – 1

Subject / homeworks per fortnight

Geography – 1
History – 1
RS – 1
DT – 1

Pupils are also expected to do 20 minutes reading every evening this should be noted in the planner. Additional homework will be set by individual subject teachers occasionally; this will also be noted in planners.

Homework is a vital part of learning and should be regarded as an important part of each weekday evening. Each piece of homework should take up to 1 hour to complete and pupils are usually given at least two nights to complete it. Homework may take a variety of forms, however please always remember that written work is to be completed rigorously and carefully, and learning tasks and revision for tests must be completed methodically.

We value your support in monitoring your child’s homework by checking their planner every day for the details of what homework has been set and then signing the planner at the end of each week.

Please keep this copy of the homework expectations so you can refer to it regularly.

Your child needs a tidy, well-organised workspace and we strongly recommend that distractions such as phones, ipads/tablets and TV are out of sight whilst they are working. If any form of technology is required for the homework this will be indicated in the planner.

Thank you for your continuing support and please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Guardian or John Reardon (Director: Curriculum) with any questions regarding the homework arrangements, including concerns about too much or too little being set.

Yours sincerely

Elaine Sharp
