Year 12 Easter break

28 March 2018

Dear Parent/Carer

This term has seen our Lower Sixth form take part in several activities aimed at researching “Next Steps” options after A Level. We had speakers come in from various industries to speak about their personal journey to their current position, as well as information workshops on higher level apprenticeships and sessions on the Unifrog platform.

The “Next Steps” week was then followed by our Higher Education Evening for parents, to help inform you of how you can support your child through this crucial period. I have highlighted some of the key points mentioned from the evening below but you can see the full presentation here.

• Your child should be using the Unifrog platform to research courses/apprenticeships, and should be creating a shortlist over the Easter break.

• Your child should also be completing the competencies section of Unifrog to keep a log of all the extra/super curricular activities they have been taking part in. This is to aid them when writing their personal statements.

• The importance of year 12 – With the decoupling of AS and A Level qualifications, universities will be basing their course offers on the predictions and reference provided by the school. The school will be submitting UCAS predicted grades by looking at the progress of your child throughout Year 12, and their performance in the end of year exams, which will take place during the week beginning Monday 25 June.

• Personal Statements – Your child has already taken part in a personal statement workshop during Guardian time. This will be followed by a second workshop after the Easter break to support them further with the personal statement. We will be expecting the final draft of the personal statement in September when your child returns for year 13.

• Organisation – To ensure your child reaches their potential, it is important that they are organising and completing independent work. Students should have folders for each of their subjects, which have been organised into relevant topics/sections. We will be conducting folder checks when we return after the Easter break.

• Support – If your child requires extra support, please refer to the list below for the relevant members of staff to see:

o Support for discussing options/courses – Ms Jenny Daykin (Careers Advisor)

o Support for writing personal statements/CV’s – Mr Evan Wroe (Sixth form tutor) or your child’s School Guardian.

o Other support – Mr Shabaz Sayed (Head of Sixth Form), Ms Christine Vesey and Mr Matthew McCurdy (Deputy Heads of Sixth Form)

To continue to support our students for their “Next Steps” all of Year 12 will be attending the UCAS exhibition booked on Wednesday 18 April. Please see this letter with more information regarding. Please sign and return the permission slip by Monday 16 April.

Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish you a lovely Easter break, and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or queries.

Yours faithfully

Shabaz Sayed
