Students are inspired by careers in STEM

2 February 2018

Since October, many of our students have been investigating careers in the City. In particular, they’ve been looking at how science, technology, engineering and maths subjects (STEM) can be applied in these careers.

In a series of INSPIRE visits, dozens of SMMA students from Years 10 to 13 were invited into major City institutions who rarely open their doors to young people. These include financial service companies (Société Générale, UBS), insurance brokers (Markel International), property companies (Cushman and Wakefield), and a cloud computing company (Salesforce).

In special maths-related workshops, the students tried their hand at trading and learned which jobs value maths skills most highly. All the students took part in interview-coaching sessions, met with inspiring employees and gained a real, valuable insight into the world of work.

Also this term, four of our Year 8 students visited BBC Broadcasting House, to see how STEM subjects can be applied in careers at the BBC, from web design to audience research to programme-making.
