SMMA teams win big in the Dragon’s Den

25 January 2018

This year, 24 of our Sixth Formers have entered the Envision Community-Apprentice competition, which aims to develop students’ employability skills at the same time as helping our local community. With support from business mentors at Baringa Partners consultancy firm, our Year 12 students compete not to see who can make the most money, but who can make the biggest difference.

The students divided into two teams, Team Ethnic Fusion and Team DNA. After canvassing opinions locally each group identified a different issue affecting our community. Both teams were tasked with creating a two minute video, in one take with no edits, to explain what they’re about. You can see their videos on our Facebook page.

Their next step was to devise a practical project tackling their chosen issue, and to visit the real Dragon’s Den studio to pitch for up to £100 of seed–funding. Both Team DNA and Team Ethnic Fusion had very strong pitches and impressed not only the judges but teams from other schools, as Team DNA were awarded the People’s Choice Award from their peers for a strong and well thought–out pitch.

We’re delighted to announce that both teams won a fantastic 98% of the full amount! Simon Lough, Envision Chair of Trustees says, ‘I’ve been going to Pitching Challenges for five years, but this year’s pitches were undoubtedly the most professional I’ve ever seen – they evidenced the hard work and creativity of all the students involved. They were brilliant events, and made all the hard work of the Envision team feel worthwhile.’

Year 12’s Elin Noseda adds, ‘The pitching challenge was a really significant experience. To see everyone coming together as a group really helped develop our confidence and coming out of it, we are now more determined than ever to win!’

This term, our students are focused on making their projects come to life. We wish both our teams the very best of luck!
