Our pupils’ favourite new book of 2017

15 December 2017

SMMA is taking part in the annual Islington Teen Read vote, running from October 2017 to March 2018. This award celebrates the best teen books published between August 2016 to July 2017, providing pupils with an opportunity to vote for their favourite new books.

The shortlist of 15 books was compiled for the pupils to vote on from a longlist of 50 most borrowed tittles supplied by the Islington public libraries and the academy’s own library data.

The first round voting is over now, and the SMMAians favourite book of 2017 is The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. The book was recommended by our Headteacher, Ms Linsley, to all pupils during assembly last academic year, soon after it was published. Indeed, it has been one of the most borrowed books from the library.

The novel follows Starr Carter, a 16-year-old who finds her voice after her childhood best friend is fatally shot by the police.

The Hate U Give has already scooped two Goodreads Choice Awards: YA Adult Fiction and Best Debut, and also has an option for a film.

The final shortlist of the six most voted for books across Islington will be announced in January. The second stage of voting will then take place, and the winning book will be announced on 27 February at a special event featuring top author Patrice Lawrence. Let’s see if our favourite wins.
