Head of Year 10 letter

14 September 2017

Dear Parent/Carer

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back your child to St Mary Magdalene Academy and, on a personal note, let you know that I am looking forward to continuing as their Head of Year.  In our first assembly of the year we introduced our year group motto for the coming academic year: ‘Forward Together’. My hope is that, over the course of this year, we work together as a school community to move each pupil in Year 10 towards their goals.

As part of our ongoing commitment to your child’s academic progress, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the importance of excellent attendance and punctuality.

Our expectation is that pupils aim for 100% attendance at school. Except in the instance of a persistent health condition, anything less than 96% will be considered poor attendance. We will continue to hold your child to these high standards in order to secure the best possible academic outcomes.

On a related note, we continue to expect pupils to be on time for school: as stated in the planner, pupils should arrive no later than 8.40am. We have notified all pupils that any pupils entering through the reception after the Liverpool and Sheringham Road gates have closed at 8.40am will be considered latecomers and will have a lunchtime detention scheduled in their planners. Again, our commitment to punctuality is part of our greater duty to ensure that your child is best prepared for success.

I would also like to draw your attention to the secondary school uniform list on page 9 of the planner, which will be a useful reference point for you and your child when purchasing new items of uniform. Particularly pertinent in the winter months is the guidance on coats, which stipulates a ‘plain navy or black overcoat’ with ‘logo no bigger than blazer badge’. I have also enclosed examples of shoes that would be acceptable for school wear.

I would like to conclude by emphasising that St Mary Magdalene Academy is a school with a firm commitment to Pastoral care. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any concerns about your child: we are keen to work closely with parents and pupils to ensure that the pupils’ time in the secondary school is as happy and as productive as possible.

Yours sincerely

Frazer Brown
