The Read Write Inc. Fresh Start programme is a short-term literacy intervention programme aimed at pupils who are currently reading below National Curriculum Level 3.
The programme focuses on the 44 common sounds in the English language and how to sound-blend words. It is a vigorous teaching of synthetic phonics.
The children then read modules with words with pre taught sounds they can sound-blend. The writing activities in the modules build upon stories and non-fiction texts so pupils make a strong link between reading and writing, spelling and grammar.
The programme has been hugely successful with some students improving their reading age by over 2 years in less than 6 months.
The Lit Programme
This programme is for ‘graduates’ of Fresh Start, or as a first intervention for Level 3 pupils, or insecure Level 4 pupils.
The Lit Programme equips students with four ‘superskills’. Through predicting, summarising, clarifying and questioning, our Year 7 and 8 students find ways to deconstruct and understand texts, helping them become good readers. The programme targets pupils who are currently below National Curriculum Level 4c.
The project team consists of three professionals, led by the Leading Teacher for Literacy, Kat Earle, who run an intervention scheme taking small groups of pupils out of mainstream lessons to develop their reading and comprehension skills.
The Lit Programme uses fiction and non-fiction resources which have been selected to appeal to pupils who struggle with literacy. The team work closely with these materials while developing their own bespoke resources which add extra value to the learning experience.
