Year 6 summer term letter

27 April 2018

Dear Parent/Carer

Welcome back to our final term.

This term is an incredibly important and busy one for your child.  In addition to their SATS tests (in which the children have been fantastic leading up to) we have the residential to Hothorpe Hall, the PYP Exhibition (further details to follow), preparation and induction for secondary school and many trips to look forward to.

Our central idea for the first half term is:

Religions have many similarities.

To gain an understanding of this central idea we will be focusing on the following lines of inquiry:

The deities, symbols, rituals and houses of worships.
The shared components of these religions.
The influence of religion on culture.

Literacy and Numeracy

The first few weeks of this term will be geared towards further work and preparation for the KS2 English and Maths tests.
Our literacy work will begin with writing on the ‘sit-in’ demonstrations of the civil rights movement before moving on to a non-fiction piece in conjunction with our unit of inquiry about religion.

This term our PPA afternoon will be on a Tuesday. During this session the children will be taking part in two Games sessions.  Please ensure that your child brings their P.E. kit to school on a Monday and takes it home to be washed on a Friday.

Please ensure that your child reads for at least 15 minutes every evening, with you listening to them at least twice a week. Discussion with your child about what they are reading, the plot, characters, setting, what they think will happen next etc. all help improve comprehension, inference and deduction skills which are vital in raising reading levels.

SATS tests will commence on the week beginning 14 May. This is a reminder for the timetable for the week:

Mon: spelling, punctuation and grammar papers (x2)
Tuesday: reading paper
Wednesday: arithmetic and 1st reasoning paper (Maths)
Thursday: 2nd reasoning paper (Maths)
