Year 6 Summer term letter

10 May 2017

Dear Parent/Carer

Welcome back to our final term.

This term is an incredibly important and busy one for your child. In addition to their SATS tests (in which the children have been fantastic!) we have the residential to Hothorpe Hall, the PYP Exhibition (further details to follow), preparation and induction for secondary school and many trips to look forward to.

Unit of Inquiry

Our central idea for the first half term is:

Media is a powerful tool which impacts on our perception of the world around us.

To gain an understanding of this central idea we will be focusing on the following lines of inquiry:

• Different forms of media
• The influence of media on society and/or individuals
• Responsible consumption and use of media

Literacy and Numeracy

The first few weeks of this term will be geared towards further work and preparation for the KS2 English and Maths tests.
Most of our literacy work will be done in conjunction with our unit of inquiry, including Journalistic writing and persuasive language.

P.P.A.

This term our PPA afternoon will be on a Wednesday. During this session the children will be taking part in two Games sessions.  Please ensure that your child brings their P.E. kit to school on a Monday and takes it home to be washed on a Friday.

Reading

Please ensure that your child reads for at least 15 minutes every evening, with you listening to them at least twice a week. Discussion with your child about what they are reading, the plot, characters, setting, what they think will happen next etc. all help improve comprehension, inference and deduction skills which are vital in raising reading levels.

Mathletics

There are many children in the class who are not currently making good use of their subscription to Mathletics.  In fact there are several children who have not completed tasks which were set over a month ago.  Mathletics is an excellent resource for children to further develop mental calculation strategies and consolidate the work that is done in class.  Please ensure that your child regularly uses Mathletics.  If they are unable to use the Internet at home there are opportunities to use school computers at break and lunchtime.
