Year 6 spring term letter 2018

12 January 2018

Dear Parent/Carer

Happy New Year, I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable holiday.

This term is an incredibly important and busy one for Year 6 as we prepare for our SATS in the Summer Term.  In addition to the work done in school there will be after school revision classes which we hope your child will attend.  Letters regarding these will be sent out separately.

Our central idea for the first half term is:

Media is a powerful tool which impacts on our perception of the world around us

To gain an understanding of this central idea we will be focusing on the following lines of inquiry:

• Different forms of media.
• Responsible consumption and use of media.
• The influence of media on society and/or individuals.

As in previous years we will be working with the Young Shakespeare Company on weekly rehearsals towards our final performance of Hamlet.

For the first half of this term we will be using the text of ‘The Mysteries of Harris Burdick’ and also looking at persuasion in the media to develop the children’s literacy skills, as well as their understanding of our Unit of Inquiry.

We will be continuing to build on the units of work from last term using both written and mental methods to solve problems involving all four operations.  We will be further developing our understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages and using these in problem solving activities.  We will look at shape, angles, length and time, again paying particular attention to using the skills we have learnt in problem solving and real life situations.  This will be followed by handling data (probability, line graphs, conversion charts and pie charts).

This term our PPA afternoon will be on a Tuesday. They will be developing their skills in a variety of evasion games, and handball. They will also be developing their dance skills in preparation for the dance section of our Shakespeare production. Please ensure that your child brings their P.E. kit to school on a Monday and takes it home to be washed on a Friday.

We shall continue to consolidate and improve our spellings from the extensive list given to the children last term. Also children are expected to complete a 10 minute test in reading, maths and SPAG, completed in the CGP books.

Homework (Literacy & Maths) will be set on a Friday to be handed in the following Friday. However because the Maths needs to be marked individually it would be appreciated if it could be given in prior to Friday Morning to allow us time to do this.  It is important that your child does their homework and it comes in on the correct day.  Children who continuously fail to complete homework will have to complete this work during break and lunchtimes.

Please continue to ensure that your child reads for at least 15 minutes every evening, with you listening to them at least twice a week.  Also remember to go on Mathletics or Hegerty Maths (more appropriate for year 6) regularly!

If you have any questions or concerns about your child and their learning please do not hesitate to come and speak to me.
