Year 5 spring term letter 2018

12 January 2018

Dear Parent/Carer

We hope you and your family had a lovely Christmas and your child is excited for what lies ahead in their next term of Year 5. As a class, we continued to have an excellent Autumn term with lots of valuable learning and progress made.

This half term our central idea is:

Living things need to adapt in order to survive

Literacy

Our literacy units this half term are short stories that create suspense and Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. The first will provide opportunity for the children to create some dramatic writing, whilst the second will link in to our Shakespeare production and the drama and dance lessons that the children will be having throughout the term.

Numeracy

We will be covering all aspects of Numeracy this term, including more of an emphasis on fraction work, statistics and word problems. It is vital that all children can recall their multiplication facts up to 12x12 quickly so please encourage this at home. All children have their Mathletics log-in details so this is a further tool which can be used to support your child’s learning outside of school.

Science

Our Science lessons continue to be linked to our units of inquiry. This half term we will be exploring the elements of biology that link to adaptation and food chains.

R.E.

This term our unit is journey, authority and faith so we will be examining topics such as the ascension of Jesus through our RE lessons.

P.P.A.

This term the children will be taking part in P.E. lessons during P.P.A. time.  This will be on a Tuesday afternoon.  Please ensure that your child comes to school with their P.E. kits on Monday, to be taken home and washed every Friday.

Homework

All children are expected to practise their times tables and learn their spellings every week. Spellings will continue to be set on Friday, with a test the following Friday.  There will also be a piece of Literacy or Numeracy homework sent out every Friday to be returned the following Thursday.  In addition to this, the children may be asked to complete research or project work linked to our unit of inquiry; however this will not be weekly. We would like you to continue to ensure that your child reads for 10-15 minutes EVERY day and they have a large selection of books both in the school library and Reading Road Map scheme in order to support this.
