Year 3 spring term letter 2018

12 January 2018

Dear Parent/Carer,

Happy New Year and welcome back! We hope that you have all enjoyed a wonderful Christmas break with your loved ones and are ready for a new term. Thank you so much for all the thoughtful gifts you gave us.

Unit of Inquiry

We start the term with our Unit of Inquiry focusing on Light. Our central idea for the first half term is:

Light is a form of energy that is part of our everyday lives

Over the course of this unit the children will develop an understanding of how our lives and the world around us are impacted by different sources of light.

Please see the attached Unit of Inquiry for further information.

Mathematics

We will continue to consolidate their written methods of the four calculations. We will also be exploring data handling and money. Please take the opportunity to talk to children about the cost of items and the calculations used when transactions are carried out in shops. This term’s Key Instant Recall Fact (KIRF) is recalling facts about durations of time, this is great with the start of a new year as children can discuss new calendars, looking at the length of each day, week, month and year.

Literacy

We start the term by looking at the exciting book ‘The Firework-Maker’s Daughter’ by Philip Pullman. We will use this text to help explore the text types: playscripts and instructions. We will then move on to studying Shakespeare’s Hamlet in preparation for our school performance.

We ask that children to remember to keep up reading at home, and changing their books from our book corner so they can complete their reading road map. Children should still be reading daily at home and discussing their reading with you to support their development in literacy.

Additionally, our weekly spelling tests will continue to be on a Friday. We have found the children learn them best when focusing on learning between 3-5 spellings a day and then revising them later in the week.

P.E.

Year 3 will now have their weekly P.E. sessions on Thursday afternoons. It is essential that your child has the appropriate clothing for these PE sessions. They should bring their PE kits in on Monday and take them home at the end of the week. This term we will also have dance rehearsals on Tuesday mornings. For these sessions, children need to remove socks and shoes so it is suggested that girls don’t wear tights on these days to facilitate this.

Homework

The children will be given weekly homework to complete and spellings to learn. Either Unit of Inquiry, Maths or Literacy homework will be given each Friday and due for submission on the following Wednesday. The children are expected to spend 30 minutes on their homework each week. Furthermore, children have passwords to access Mathletics if they would like to play the maths games, helping to improve and build on the skills being taught in class.
