Year 1 spring term letter 2018

12 January 2018

Dear Parent/Carer

Welcome back to Spring Term. I hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas and I wish you all a very Happy New Year! I would like to thank you again for your very generous gifts and kind words received at Christmas.

This term we will be reading fiction and non-fiction books during shared and guided reading. We will be continuing with the Sound-write programme, where we concentrate on building phonics skills.

During our literacy lessons we will be looking at Fairy stories to help the children with reading, writing sentences, using simple sentence punctuation and developing speaking and listening skills. Writing opportunities will increase as we will learn how to write recounts. We will continue to ensure that all children can hold their pencil correctly and write a number of simple sentences independently using their sounds.

In Mathematics we will look at naming, recalling, estimating, ordering, adding, subtracting and writing numbers to at least 20. Right at the beginning of the term we will be looking at halves of a quantity or a shape as well as quarters.  We will also be ensuring that we know numbers before or after a given number. There will be a bigger focus on solving problems about money as well as to name the value of different coins. We will identify, name and describe basic two dimensional shapes and three dimensional objects in our environment. Estimating and measuring the weight of objects will be another thing that we will be working on this term.

Unit of Inquiry

Our central idea for the first half term is:

People in communities use a variety of skills and abilities to work together

To gain an understanding of this central idea we will be focusing on the following lines of inquiry:

• Jobs and skills of people in our school.
• Jobs and skills of people who help us in our community.

During this unit we will explore different professions so we will invite different professionals to talk about their jobs and skills. If you would like to talk to our class about your job or you have any suggestions for this unit of Inquiry, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Like last term, spellings will be handed out on Fridays and tested on the Friday after. We will keep reviewing the sounds that we learn in our phonics lessons. We will also start send out and look at common exception words.  As you know the spelling tests are done on the spelling books so you can check how your child did in the test. Do please check that your child’s spelling book is back at school by Thursday.

Also a small amount of Literacy work, Maths questions or unit of inquiry work might be handed out on Fridays too. This should then be returned by the following Thursday.

Reading books will continue to be changed daily as much as possible. Please encourage your child to get their reading book and home reading diary out of their bag if it needs changing. We will only change the books if a small notes is on the reading record to ensure that it has been read.

Please see attached the KIC that we will be focusing on this term. We have included some suggestions on how to support your child with it.

This term the children won’t have Gymnastics on Mondays. They will have their normal PE lesson on Thursdays. It is really important that P.E kits are in school on Monday if they are taken home to be washed. Please also note that the children do partake in games outside. Please ensure that your child the appropriate clothes to wear while the weather is cold.
