Reception class summer term letter

27 April 2018

Dear Parents/Carers

We are very excited about the summer term as we have lots of exciting things ahead!

Unit of Inquiry – Sharing Our Planet

This term our unit of inquiry will be based around the garden and all the wonderful mini-beasts and plants we find in the garden as well as animals we have around us in everyday life, including pets at home. Our Central Idea is:

We need to appreciate and care for the living world around us.

The children will discover why we need living things in our world and how we can work together to care for the plants and animals around us. Through this they will be developing their appreciation for the natural world and all its beauty!

We will be exploring non-fiction texts to help us find information about what we discover in the garden. We will create posters with instructions about caring for plants and we will be writing some of our own non-fiction book about mini-beasts. The children should develop an appreciation for the living creatures they discover outside. We will be making our own ‘pet monsters’ to take care of at home and we will also be looking in depth at the text, “Jack and the Beanstalk” and writing our own story of it and also planting our own seeds to see what magical creation they become.

We will continue to change your child’s book on a Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure that your child’s reading book is kept in their book bag.  As you know this is the last term in Reception.  We will therefore like to work with you to have a big push on their reading which is so important. The more they read at home, the easier they will find work at school. As usual, please leave a comment in their reading record so we know they have been read with and we can change the book.  We understand some of the books are a little worn, however some of books were only bought last year so please return the book in the condition you received it and do not write in the books.

This term our main focus will be on number.  By the end of Reception we hope children will recognise numbers to at least 30, be able to order numbers to 20, be able to say 1 more/1 less and to be able to solve simple addition and subtraction problems.  We will also look at doubling, halving and sharing, as well as symmetry when we learn about minibeasts.

Understanding the World

Throughout the term the children will develop their knowledge and understanding skills. The children will be planting and growing seeds. We hope that our exploration of the garden will inspire the children to ask many questions and initiate further inquiries within the school and at home.

We will continue to have P.E on Monday afternoons.  Please remember to bring in their P.E kit including blue bottoms and a white t-shirt and with any additional articles of clothing dependent on the weather. Please ensure that all items of clothing including PE kit, school uniform, summer hats and jackets are clearly named to avoid any confusion.

Now it is the summer it will be warming up, please ensure that on a hot and sunny day your child comes to school wearing a named sun hat and sun cream.  Please make sure the cream is on your child before they come to school.  We have cups and water always available and we remind the children regularly to have a drink so they do not become dehydrated.
