Year 6 spring term newsletter

15 January 2010

Dear Parent/Carer

Happy New Year, I hope you had a restful and enjoyable holiday.

This term is an incredibly important and busy one for Year 6 as we prepare for our SATS in the Summer Term. In addition to the work done in school there will be after school and Saturday morning revision classes which we hope your child will attend.

Topic

For the first half term our concept or topic will be: Conflicts Shape and Influence Our Lives. This will be a mainly historical unit, with the focus being the impact of World War 2 on London.

Drama

As in previous years we will be working with the Young Shakespeare company to produce a production. This year we will be performing Macbeth. The performance will be Thursday 18 March.

Literacy

We have begun the term learning about Arguments, for the remainder of the half term we will be learning about flashbacks within stories. During the second half term we will be revising both the reading and writing of different texts in poetry, non-fiction and fiction.

Numeracy

We will be continuing to build on the units of work from last term using both written and mental methods to solve problems involving all four operations. We will be further developing our understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages and using these in problem solving activities. We will look at shape, angles, length and time, again paying particular attention to using the skills we have learnt in problem solving and real life situations. This will be followed by handling data (probability, line graphs, conversion charts and pie charts).

Science

We will begin this term by furthering our understanding of Dissolving and other Reversible and Irreversible Changes, which will involve the planning and carrying out of scientific investigations. We will then study Balanced and Unbalanced Forces before looking at electricity in Changing Circuits.

RE

This term our RE topic is entitled “Encounter” and is about mysterious and special meetings and encounters.

PE
This term our PPA afternoon will be on a Tuesday. During this session the children will be taking part in Dance lessons to link with our production of Macbeth in addition to a Games session. Please ensure that your child brings their PE kit to school on a Monday and takes it home to be washed on a Friday.

Homework

Spellings will be given to children on a Friday and they will be tested on them the following Friday. If your child is absent from school it is their responsibility to ensure that they get the spellings from someone else.

Homework will be set on a Friday to be handed in the following Wednesday. It is important that your child does their homework and it comes in on the correct day. Children who continuously fail to complete homework will have to complete this work during break and lunchtimes.
Please continue to ensure that your child reads for at least 15 minutes every evening, with you listening to them at least twice a week. Please use their reading journal to record this.

This term our class assembly will be on Friday 5 February, 2.50pm I hope that you are able to come.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child and their learning please do not hesitate to come and speak to me.

Yours sincerely

Miss S Williamson
Mrs L Woods
