Year 5 spring term newsletter
15 January 2010
Dear Parent/Carer
I hope everybody had a lovely Christmas and Happy New Year!
This term we are continuing our topic based work, connecting many of our subjects to the central theme of our topic.
This term our concept or topic is: Setting the Stage.
This will link in with Literacy as we study play-scripts, film scripts and Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
We already have a visit to see the puppet performance of Petrushka at the Little Angel Theatre in Islington organised. This will be on Friday 22 January. We hope to use this performance as a basis for further literacy work as well as art and design.
Numeracy
We will be covering all aspects of Numeracy this term, some revision based and others introducing new skills and strategies to the children. I hope that all children will continue to practise their times tables and mental calculation skills. This term there is also a school-wide focus on number bonds.
Dance and Drama
Year 5 are to be involved in the Young Shakespeare Company production of Macbeth this year, together with Year 6. We have drama sessions all morning every Thursday, working towards the production at the end of term. We will also be having dance sessions for this performance during our PPA session on Tuesday afternoons.
PE
We no longer go swimming!
We will not be doing Gym this term again due to the fact we now have dance and drama sessions every week.
PPA afternoons are on Tuesdays. Please could all children to come to school with PE kits on Mondays so that they are ready for any eventuality during the week, to be taken home for washing on Fridays.
As a reminder, children need to wear SMMA white T-shirt and shorts or tracksuit bottoms and must remember to bring trainers or plimsolls every week.
Homework
All children are expected to learn their times tables and spelling words each week. There will also be a piece of Literacy, Numeracy and/or Topic homework sent out every Thursday, to be returned the following Tuesday or Wednesday.
Dates for your diary
Friday 22 January: Puppet performance of Petrushka
Friday 12 February: Class Assembly, 2.50pm
Thank you for all your support.
Miss Earle
