Year 3 spring term newsletter
Friday 15 January 2010
Dear Parent/Carer
I hope that you had an enjoyable break over the Christmas holidays, and had a chance to enjoy the snowy weather. This term is set to be busy as we move onto our new topic, The Romans, and we have lots of activities planned.
Core learning this term
The Romans topic will be the centre of much of the children’s learning this term. We will be making Roman mosaics in Art, exploring Roman artefacts and their functions, carrying out drama work and research from a range of sources. On our Roman Day the children will need to bring in a costume as we will be having a Roman feast!
In Science we will be investigating and comparing the properties of different materials.
In our Literacy work we will be focusing on the key skills of sentence structure and punctuation. The children will be reading and writing adventure stories and looking to see how they can improve their own work.
In Maths we will be continuing to work on a range of topics including telling the time, showing data on charts, shape and key number skills.
Homework
As you may already know, the children have been set a Romans project as an ongoing homework throughout this half term. We are encouraging the children to find information on the internet, library books or at museums. The deadline for this work is Monday 8th February. Please see the task sheet in your child’s homework folder for more details. The children will continue to receive spellings to learn for a test on Fridays. They will also receive a fortnightly Maths homework to complete for the following Monday.
PE
This term the children will have gym lessons on a Monday and Games on a Wednesday. As you know, we will be taking the children for swimming lessons every Tuesday. Please remember girls must wear full-body swimsuits and boys must wear lycra trunks or shorts. Children with long hair need to wear a swimming hat or it must be tied back, please include a hairbrush in their swim bag. If your child is well enough to be in school, they must attend swimming or provide a doctor’s note. We are always in need of parents to help us walk the class to the pool. If you’d like to help, please do speak to myself, Beverley or Maria.
Dates for your diary
Thursday 4th February: Museum of London, Roman Alive! Visit
Monday 8th February: Roman Project deadline
Friday 12th February: Roman Day. Please bring a costume, e.g. a white sheet for a toga and any props!
Friday 5th March: Class Assembly, 2.50pm
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continuing support with regards to furthering your child’s learning. In order to build upon the progress your child has already made, it is important for your child to read every day, and to practise the times tables on regular basis. We very much appreciate your efforts in these areas. If you have any questions regarding how best to support your child, please let me know and I’ll be happy to help.
All the best for the New Year!
Kind regards
