Reception Class spring term newsletter

Friday 15th January

Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome to the Spring Term in Reception class. We’ve got a lot to look forward to and we will be building on all of our successes from last term.

Communication Language and Literacy

This half term the children are going to learning the last few letter sounds. Most of the children in the class can now hear the first sounds in a simple regular word. We are going to be moving on to hearing the last sound in a word and representing these correctly in our writing. We will also be continuing our focus on using finger spaces between our words when writing.

This half term there will be a theme each week for show and tell on a Friday. This week please help your child to bring in a toy that they have had since they were a baby. This is to give the children the opportunity to say a little more about what they have brought in.

Just a quick reminder about reading, your child has a reading book and diary in their book bag. Please hear your child read their book and talk with them about what is happening in the story every night. When you have heard them read please write a comment in their reading diary to tell me what they did well and anything that your child found hard. Reading books will be changed on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please make sure that your child brings their book to school every day so that we can share their book with them. Our library day is Friday, when your child will bring home a book for you to share together (this is not a book that they will be able to read yet), these will be changed every 2 weeks. Also on a Friday the reading buddies from Year 6 will be coming to the class to read with the children, so you can expect to see a comment in your child’s diary from them.

Problem Solving Reasoning and Numeracy

Most of the children can now count confidently past ten and recognise the corresponding numbers. This half term we are going to be learning to combine two groups together, in preparation for addition and separating groups, in preparation for subtraction. Later in the term we will be comparing the sizes and weights of different objects, using vocabulary such as greater, smaller, heavier and lighter.

Topic

Our topic this half term is food from around the world. The children will be learning about foods that they should eat everyday and those that they should only eat as a treat. We will be comparing the different breads from around the world and deciding which we like best. We will also be making lots of different foods, so please make sure that we know about any allergies that your child has.

PE

Our PE times remain the same as last term. We will be having PE on a Monday afternoon with Theo Lake. They also have a dance session with Abbey Rosser on a Tuesday afternoon. Please make sure that your child has the appropriate kit with them. They should bring their PE kits on a Monday and I will send them home at the end of the week.

Finally I would like to say thank you for all of your support. If you have any questions or queries please don’t hesitate to ask one of us the reception class team

Many thanks
