Islington Boat Club
Schools canoeing at Islington Boat Club started in 1972 and since then tens of thousands of local children have attended sessions here. We also have considerable experience working with excluded young people who are sent to us via local pupil referral units.
Islington Boat Club is a well-equipped, purpose-built centre situated on the City Road Basin off the Regent’s Canal. This represents a safe environment of 3 acres of water. The centre has hot showers and separate changing facilities. We have a large fleet of canoes and kayaks for 1 to 3 people. All our equipment is maintained to an excellent standard as safety is our number one priority.
Our instructors are all experienced and British Canoe Union qualified coaches. All staff are police-checked and approved. Schools’ Water Sports take place all year round. Protective clothing is provided for inclement weather conditions. The wearing of buoyancy aids/life jackets is compulsory for all water-based activities.
What we are
IBC is a registered charity set up to provide water activities for young people, as well as certified training in different activities such as Kayaking or Power Boating.
Who is the club for
Our sessions are aimed at young people aged 9 to 18 who can swim 25m in light clothing. Our maximum group size is 12 per instructor. It may be possible to accommodate more than one group at a time. We also welcome groups or individuals with special needs, and have full wheelchair access to our craft and facilities. To ensure safety it may be necessary to reduce the group size for people with special needs, disabilities or challenging behaviours.
How much does it cost?
Cost: £1 per half day / evening, £2 all day session, or £20 per term, £30 summer project, £50 per year. Concessions apply.
