First class results for students in the Virgin Trains Catering Challenge

24 March 2017

Last week, our Year 10 Hospitality & Catering Students enjoyed a First Class experience on the train to Peterborough. Their day was the final leg of an exciting new competition: the Virgin Trains Catering Challenge.

It’s a project devised by our Technologies Department with professional input from Virgin – and a fantastic prize of two First Class train tickets for every winning student. Over the course of eight lessons, with Virgin’s input at every stage, our students took on the challenge of devising a perfect First Class menu.

Their first step was to listen to customers’ views and consider what improvements could be made to the current Virgin First Class Menu. Students then worked in teams to plan a new menu that would be nutritious, sustainable and economical to produce – and up to professional First Class standard.

Some great dishes were prepared and in the first heat, a delicious Chicken Risotto and Raspberry Cheesecake won the day.

In the second heat, it was Chicken and Chorizo Pie with Steamed Vegetables, followed by a Triple Chocolate Brownie, that won the judges’ admiration.

Each student in the winning teams receives a pair of First Class train tickets.

And last week all our students were treated to a trip behind the scenes at King’s Cross station, where they saw first-hand how food is delivered onto the trains, before getting a taste of the Virgin First Class experience themselves. Virgin have been great partners, and are even considering a national roll-out to other schools.

‘it was a very fun, relaxing and interesting trip which enabled us to learn about cooking in the real world.’ Taylor Cable, Year 10

‘It was fantastic service and very comfortable,’ Jenae Dhami, Year 10
