Monique and Imaan speak out!

13 December 2017

This term, our Year 10 students have been polishing their public speaking skills – with help from the Jack Petchey Foundation, organisers of the world’s largest speaking competition for young people.

First, the students were coached on how to create and deliver a speech for maximum effect. The most impressive were selected to perform at our Year 10 assembly, speaking for three minutes on a subject of their own choice. Well done to Charlie, Monique, Simge and Imaan, who each delivered interesting speeches with great passion and flair.

It was Imaan’s powerful speech on unfair stereotyping, ‘Stop’, and Monique’s thought–provoking piece, ‘What is Normal?’, that won places in the next round: the Islington Regional Final of the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge.

Last Thursday, Imaan and Monique overcame any early nerves to perform their speeches in the Regional Final at Elizabeth Garret Anderson school, in front of Paul Hobbs, Islington Borough Commander of the London Fire Brigade.

Their hard work and practice paid off, and although they narrowly missed the honours in a tough competition, their inspirational performances certainly did themselves and our Academy proud.

Great work, Imaan and Monique!
