Careers event for Courtyard pupils

17 October 2017

On Friday 13 October, the Courtyard School in Islington held its first annual careers event.

The purpose of the event was to inform pupils and their parents of the possibilities and options available to them. The event was well attended by local colleges, the National Apprenticeship Service and local tradespeople, ranging from hairdressers to electricians, accountants and hoteliers. Commonly, young people with these conditions find it extremely difficult to access successful forms of paid employment once leaving education.

The afternoon was a huge success and has ignited a sense of purpose and meaning in the Courtyard pupils. They have ideas and contacts to support them in succeeding in their potential in the future. The school will continue to work with the companies and professions that attended, arranging work experience opportunities and hopefully apprenticeships in the future.

The parents of Courtyard pupils commented:

‘This event was very well organised and lots of the information was extremely helpful. It was good for our son to get an idea of what possibilities will be open to him in a few years time. It’s very reassuring to know that his future from 16 is taken care of with lots of options available to him. A big thank you to everyone that made it such a success and we look forward to attending more in the future.’

‘The event was ideal for my son. He is unsure of whether his future lies in further education or in a trade career. He spoke to a number of professionals who advised him on courses he could attend at college whilst working part-time or volunteering with a trade company, similar to an apprenticeship scheme. This information was invaluable to my son as he does worry about his future and the unknown. A huge thank you to Mrs Shepherd and her staff for considering every aspect of my son’s development.’
